DIESEL / DISTILLATE ANALYSIS

U.S. distillate: domestic use and exports.

An interactive baseline built from EIA annual series, 2020–2025. The broad distillate category covers diesel and heating oil.

Annual EIA estimates: Production · Imports · Product supplied · Exports. Availability = refinery & blender net production + imports; domestic use is EIA product supplied. Stacks are separate supply and disposition views; inventory changes and other balance items can make their totals differ.

INTERPRETATION

Implications

In 2025, the United States exported about 24.3% of the annual distillate availability shown here: 1.250 million barrels per day exported divided by 4.993 million barrels per day of domestic refinery and blender net production plus 0.159 million barrels per day of imports. Across 2020–2025, the same export-to-availability ratio ranged from 21.6% to 25.4%.

Distillate fuel oil is chiefly diesel fuel, with other diesel uses and heating oil in the category. It is useful for comparing broad diesel-related supply and trade, but is not a count of on-highway diesel alone. EIA product supplied is the chart’s approximation of domestic use. Production plus imports and domestic use plus exports need not balance exactly because stocks and other supply adjustments also change.

For 2025, the leading U.S. distillate export destinations were Mexico, about 216,000 barrels per day (17.3% of exports); Chile, about 126,000 (10.1%); and Brazil, about 100,000 (8.0%). These shares use EIA’s 2025 U.S. export total of 1.250 million barrels per day as the denominator. The source country tables are rounded by export region, so destination totals are approximate. These annual export shares alone do not establish a cause of retail diesel price changes.

INTERPRETATION

How distillate relates to diesel

Distillate is the broader petroleum category that contains diesel fuel and heating oil. Product supplied is EIA’s domestic consumption approximation at the primary supply level. It provides a useful directional indicator for diesel demand, especially where diesel dominates the category, but weather-sensitive heating oil and inventory timing can affect the relationship. The exports series is a separate flow.
